Marijuana is a psychoactive substance that consists of dried leaves, stems, flowers and seeds of the cannabis sativa plant. One of the most frequently abused recreational drugs in the United States, marijuana induces a sense of relaxation, improved mood, and increased appetite. Other immediate short-term effects of marijuana abuse include impaired motor skills, short-term memory impairments, and paranoia. Because it is so commonly abused, and because many states have legalized or decriminalized its use in recent years, many people harbor the mistaken belief that marijuana is a harmless substance. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
The continued abuse of marijuana has been linked to both short-term damage and long-term impairments. For example, individuals who are under the influence of marijuana are at increased risk for physical injuries and legal problems that may result from their impaired sensory perceptions and diminished ability to make good decisions. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, interacts with the brain in a manner that may lead to structural damage in the brains of long-term marijuana users. Also, individuals who become dependent upon marijuana may jeopardize their continued physical, emotional, psychological, and socioeconomic wellbeing as their compulsions to acquire and abuse this drug overtake their ability to meet the personal and professional responsibilities that are part of a healthy and productive life.
At Mirror Lake, we have worked diligently to help individuals overcome the compulsion to abuse marijuana, and our staff members have decades of combined experience helping people regain control over their behaviors and achieve long-term abstinence from marijuana. With specialized rehab programming that is designed to meet the unique needs of individuals who have become trapped in a downward spiral of marijuana abuse, Mirror Lake is a place where the pain of substance abuse and addiction can be replaced with the promise of a healthy drug-free life.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If someone you care about has been abusing marijuana, you may be tempted to express relief that your loved one is not involved with a more dangerous substance. Resist that urge. Marijuana abuse can undermine your loved one’s ability to live a healthy life. With a few simple steps, though, you can help your loved one get back on the path to a productive drug-free future:
- First, consult reputable sources such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), or the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to learn about the very real dangers of long-term marijuana abuse.
- Research the disease of addiction and familiarize yourself with the many ways that addiction can impact an individual’s life. In order to provide the best possible support for your loved one, you must understand the challenges that he or she is facing.
- Learn about the types of treatment that have helped others who were dealing with similar problems, and identify specific rehab centers that appear to be best suited to meeting his or her unique needs.
- When your loved one is ready to receive treatment, volunteer to assist with appointments, travel arrangements, childcare, and other logistics that will free him or her up to focus on getting better.
Remember, overcoming a substance abuse problem is a long process that will involve both successes and setbacks. Plan to be a consistent positive presence in your loved one’s life every step of the way.
