Stimulants are a category of both legal and illicit substances that elicit a sense of increased energy, enhanced ability to focus, and improved motivation. Common legal stimulants include caffeine, nicotine, and the prescription medications Ritalin and Adderall. Cocaine and methamphetamine are among the stimulants whose possession and use is often illegal.
The prescription stimulants noted in the previous paragraph are most commonly prescribed to treat symptoms associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These medications are also often abused by individuals who wish to take advantage of the drug’s ability to improve focus and concentration. Cocaine and methamphetamine are commonly abused for the intense euphoric rush that they provide, as well as the boost in energy. Regardless why a person abuses any stimulant, the potential negative impacts include temporary incapacitation, addiction, and even death. Becoming dependent upon stimulants, which is clinically referred to as stimulant use disorder, can be extremely difficult to overcome without effective entering a rehab center to receive professional intervention.
At Mirror Lake, our addiction treatment professionals have decades of combined experience working with men and women whose lives have been upended by stimulant use disorder, and we have developed effective comprehensive rehab programming to help people end their dependence upon stimulants and make the lifestyle changes that will support successful long-term recovery
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If someone you care about as become dependent upon stimulants, please consider the following:
- Educate yourself about the disease of addiction and the ways stimulant addiction can effect a person.
- Research the types of treatment that have helped others who have struggled with stimulant abuse and stimulant use disorder.
- Identify specific rehab centers that offer the type and level of treatment that appears to be best suited to your loved one’s specific needs.
- Learn how to talk to someone about his or her addiction. What you say, how you say it, and even when or where you have this conversation can be extremely important.
- Keep an open mind and a loving heart. Never lose sight of the fact that your loved one is dealing with a disease that impairs his or her ability to think clearly and act in a responsible manner. Resist the temptation to judge; instead, focus on getting your loved one the help that he or she so desperately needs.
- Offer to make appointments, arrange tours of potential programs, provide childcare, or take care of any other logistical issues that will free your loved one up to focus on getting into rehab to receive treatment and overcoming his or her stimulant addiction.
Remember that recovery is a long and winding path and that your loved one will need your continued support before, during, and after he or she completes treatment. Commit to being there for the good times and the bad in the weeks, months, and years to come.
Why Those in Tennessee Should Consider Treatment at Mirror Lake Recovery Center
The continued untreated abuse of stimulants puts individuals at risk for significant physical, mental, and emotional harm. Long-term stimulant abuse has been linked to several types of organ damage, including harm to the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. From a cognitive perspective, abusing stimulants increases the likelihood that a person will struggle to make and access memories, solve problems, and otherwise function at his or her best. People whose bodies and minds experience this damage as a result of stimulant abuse will have problems meeting their responsibilities at work or in school, and are unlikely to be able to productively participate in healthy interpersonal relationships. Additional negative outcomes such as family discord, academic failure and expulsion, job loss and unemployment, financial ruin, legal problems including arrest and incarceration, and homelessness become increasingly likely. Without effective professional intervention, continued stimulant abuse can take an individual down a dangerous and ultimately devastating path. Yet when a person enters treatment at a rehab center for his stimulant use disorder, past damage can be repaired, future devastation can be avoided, and the path of despair can be transformed into the road to recovery.

Depending on the individual needs of our clients, the following are among the elements that may be included into a client’s customized rehab plan while participating in treatment at Mirror Lake:
Medically monitored detoxification: When clients come to Mirror Lake addicted to certain substances, such as stimulants, they may require detox prior to engaging in our residential programming. When this is the case, men and women benefit from our medical staff’s expertise during the process of withdrawal by receiving the treatment they need as their bodies are cleared of the harmful substances that cause their addictions. Mirror Lake employs various protocols for delivering detox services, and the particular protocol used will be dependent upon the type of addiction that a client is battling during their time at our rehab center.
Medication management services: While in detox, clients may receive daily medication management services. Monitored by our psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and nurses, these services are also available on an as-needed basis to clients in our residential programming when medication is deemed necessary to manage the symptoms of an addiction and/or mental illness.
Individual therapy: Intended to be intensive and brief, individual therapy sessions are scheduled for each patient on a weekly basis. Our expertly trained counselors work one-on-one with clients receiving stimulant addiction treatment, as they assist them in establishing short-term rehab goals, solving problems, and processing their addictions to stimulants and other substances. Additionally, if a client was seeing a counselor prior to admission, that counselor can participate in these sessions with the client’s consent.
Family therapy: In order to help clients repair and restructure their relationships with their loved ones, our center facilitates family therapy sessions on a weekly basis. These sessions are led by our dedicated counselors and allow our clients, their family members, and other loved ones to heal together. By including these sessions as part of our care, we help our clients and those closest to them to move forward in a healthy and unified manner. Family therapy sessions take place at our rehab center in Burns, Tennessee.
