The Importance of Addiction Treatment for Pregnant Women

While pregnancy is a miraculous, beautiful journey, it can also be a challenging one. For many women, like those who are struggling with substance use disorders, the journey to motherhood can be exceptionally complex. The reality is that addiction can affect anyone, including expectant mothers.

At Mirror Lake Recovery Center, we recognize that what should be a time of joy, anticipation, and hope for pregnant women can also be a period marked by fear and uncertainty. At our facility, we provide parent-specific programming and addiction treatment for women who are pregnant up to their third trimester.

We understand the unique needs of pregnant women who are battling addictions, and we are dedicated to offering the emotional support and care they need to heal and build a brighter future for themselves and their children.

The Effects of Substance Use During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of significant physical and emotional changes during which sustaining optimal health is vital for both the mother and unborn baby. Substance use during pregnancy poses serious health risks not only for the mother but also for the developing fetus, and the long-term consequences can be tragic and devastating.

Potential health effects of substance use during pregnancy may include:

  • Maternal health problems, such as an increased risk for miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm labor, and complications during childbirth
  • Physical health problems for the baby, such as low birth weight, growth deficiencies, respiratory issues, and an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS)
  • Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which encompass a range of developmental, cognitive, and behavioral concerns
  • Increased risk for the child developing an addiction later in life

Though the health risks are consequential, studies show that the use of one or more than one substance, which is called polysubstance use, is not uncommon during pregnancy. In one study conducted between 2011 and 2013, 1 in 33 women reported binge drinking during pregnancy. Another study from 2020 revealed that an estimated 10% of pregnant women reported current alcohol use, and of these women, about 40% reported current use of one or more additional substances.

To ensure the well-being of both themselves and their unborn children, it’s essential for pregnant women who are suffering from substance use disorders to find the appropriate support and medical care right away. Early intervention can help expectant mothers avoid the long-term effects of substance use during pregnancy and establish healthier habits before welcoming their babies into the world.
