Ethyl alcohol, which is most commonly referred to simply as alcohol, is an intoxicating substance that is created by fermenting yeast, sugars, and starches. In its purest form, alcohol is a clear liquid. Typically consumed at social events and celebrations and found in beer, wine, and liquor, alcohol is one of the most commonly used drugs worldwide. However, many people struggle to use alcohol in moderation, and many people who abuse alcohol eventually develop an alcohol use disorder (AUD), or alcoholism. Without proper treatment from a rehab center, overcoming an addiction to alcohol can be extremely difficult.
At Mirror Lake, we have extensive experience providing rehab to help people overcome alcohol use disorders, and our caring and compassionate staff members are eager to give you the best possible chance at living a life free from the influence of this substance.
Steps to Help a Loved One
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Alcohol Abuse Treatment
Watching a loved one battle with alcohol use disorder can be a profoundly difficult experience and may elicit a range of emotions, including fear, anger, betrayal, sadness, and anxiety. Despite the range of emotions you are likely feeling, you can still be of help to your loved one by taking the following steps:
- Learn about AUD. Learning about the disorder can help you to understand your loved one’s struggle and may even build your ability to empathize with what he or she is going through. Researching AUD can also help you recognize the symptoms of an alcohol overdose, or alcohol poisoning, and prepare you to act if necessary.
- Research treatment options. Spend time looking into various rehab centers and find a few that may be a good fit for your loved one. Admissions staff at your chosen rehab centers would be happy to talk with you about their programs and treatment approaches, so feel free to call for more information.
- Talk with your loved one. Let your loved know about your concerns, but do so in an open, honest, and nonjudgmental manner. Be prepared for pushback from your loved one, but make sure the conversation does not become an argument. Continue reiterating your love for him or her and let your loved one know that you will continue to support him or her.
- When your loved one is ready to enter rehab, share your short list of treatment options and help with logistics. Call your chosen rehab center, set up appointments with staff, and make yourself available to accompany your loved one to those appointments. While your loved one is in treatment, continue actively supporting him or her.
- During this entire process, make sure to continue taking care of yourself. Keep up with your hobbies and other activities that rejuvenate you. Seek the support of your friends and loved ones, as they can help carry you through this difficult time. Finally, make sure to keep up with the basics of healthy living, such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and eating healthy.
Why Consider Treatment
Why Consider Treatment for Alcohol Abuse at Mirror Lake Recovery Center in Tennessee
Alcohol addiction can profoundly negatively affect a person’s ability to live a full and satisfying life. When a person is struggling with AUD, his or her job performance will likely suffer, possibly resulting in being demoted or fired. Being without work can cause financial strain which may carry over into one’s relationships. Separation, divorce, loss of child custody, broken friendships, and social isolation are all very real consequences of AUD. The disorder can even affect a person’s body, causing liver damage, memory impairment, and damage to other organs. If left untreated, AUD can be deadly as a result of suicide or alcohol overdose. Fortunately, however, effective professional treatment can help a person conquer AUD and reclaim his or her life.

Depending on the individual needs of our clients, the following are among the elements that may be included into a client’s customized treatment plan while participating in treatment at Mirror Lake:
Medically monitored detoxification: When clients come to Mirror Lake addicted to certain substances, such as alcohol, they may require detox prior to engaging in our residential programming. When this is the case, men and women benefit from our medical staff’s expertise during the process of withdrawal by receiving the treatment they need as their bodies are cleared of the harmful substances that cause their alcohol addictions. Mirror Lake employs various protocols for delivering detox services, and the particular protocol used will be dependent upon the type of addiction that a client is battling.
Medication management services: While in detox, clients may receive daily medication management services. Monitored by our psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and nurses, these services are also available on an as-needed basis to clients in our residential programming when medication is deemed necessary to manage the symptoms of an addiction and/or mental illness.
Individual therapy: Intended to be intensive and brief, individual therapy sessions are scheduled for each patient on a weekly basis for those receiving treatment for an addiction to alcohol. Our expertly trained counselors work with clients one-on-one and assist them in establishing short-term goals, solving problems, and processing their addictions to substances such as alcohol. Additionally, if a client was seeing a counselor prior to admission, that counselor can participate in these sessions with the client’s consent.
Family therapy: In order to help clients repair and restructure their relationships with their loved ones, our center facilitates family therapy sessions on a weekly basis. These sessions are led by our dedicated counselors and allow our clients, their family members, and other loved ones to heal together. By including these sessions as part of our care, we help our clients and those closest to them to move forward in a healthy and unified manner.
Family Program: Every Sunday, our rehab center is pleased to provide invaluable care and support to those in our clients’ primary support networks through our Family Program.
